The original idea for this event stemmed from Maryland’s’ Phil Holland. The club and Phil are delighted with this year’s turn out, for what is only the second occasion the traditional route from Lisburn to Ballygally has been toured. Phil stated, “If the event continues to grow and build on the foundation of the previous two years it will be excellent. The monies raised through these types of events will greatly benefit the David McCall Foundation in supporting cycling in Ulster.” As a mark of respect those taking part stopped at the location where Davy was tragically killed to lay flowers.

Phil went on to pay particular thanks to all roadside assistants and marshals who helped with the successful running of the event. In all approximately 50 riders turned out to support the event, a large contingent from Phoenix, East Antrim, Glendale and Northern made up the majority of the group which left Lisburn.

As normal the weather in Northern Ireland always has its part to play and conditions at times were less than favourable but nonetheless the group forged ahead braving the rain.  Unfortunately with the varying abilities it was hard to keep a pace that suited everyone around the sometimes narrow roads and junctions. Phil apologises to those who found the going tough early on but the road junctions had been painted adequately with bright yellow BR and an arrow which was not obvious enough perhaps. He has taken these issues on board and hopes to make some minor changes for future events.

Approximately £350 was raised as a result of Phil’s hard work and the support of those who participated in this year’s event.  Speaking as a member of the David McCall Foundations steering committee, Phil said,” We need continued support at the events which the foundation is organising further into the year, if the foundation is to make the impact which it wishes.”  Below are a few photos from this years event.
