Maryland Wheelers and Phoenix cycling clubs are promoting 'The David McCall Memorial Criterium' in Lisburn City centre on Wednesday 13th May 2009. The event has received significant support from its chief sponsor Lisburn City Borough Council, Red Bull have kindly got involved along with many of the main local bike shops having added their support, by sponsoring a variety of prizes throughout the evening's events which Maryland and Phoenix are extremely grateful of.

It is important to point out that the evening is centred around the memory of Maryland's David McCall who's life was tragically lost on the 12th August 08 while competing in an Inter Club League Road Race at Nutts Corner. The family and loved ones of David McCall have kindly donated 'The David McCall Memorial Inter Club Shield' which will be presented to the winner of the Inter Club race and 'The David McCall Memorial Cup' which will be presented to the winner of the 'A' race.

In the interest of exposing kids to the sport of cycle racing, Maryland and Phoenix have added a unique event to the evening, a 'Have a Go' Race. Local Primary Schools have been invited to send a team of 6 riders from the P6 and P7 age group. Kids will require a cycling helmet and a roadworthy bicycle of any type to compete; Kinning Cycles will be at hand to assist with any minor mechanical problems. John Hanna Cycles, Lisburn's well established and recognised cycle shop has kindly sponsored the race. As well as prizes for the kids there is an opportunity for the kids to win some school funds for the top cycling school. Schools may contact Gerry Lundy for details at gflundy@btinternet.com
